College Employment: Trends in Hiring and Retaining Young Adults
Phil Gardner, Ph.D.
Director
Collegiate Employment Research Institute
The 2008 college labor market reflected aggressive and cautious recruiting at the same time. Large employers, compelled by the pending Boomer retirement, aggressively sought new talent despite the weakening economy. Medium and smaller size employers were more cautious and have eased expectations on hiring. Going into 2009, we expect college hiring to remain healthy at least for students targeted by large employers; for others it might change.
What will remain constant are the management issues young adults present their managers. Reneging, surfing, rewards and criticism on work quality are common topics with employers. Recent evidence from a survey on young adults will enrich the labor market information during this session.
